The bar chart compares 4 countries in term of the percentage of consumer spending on food, housing, transportation, health care and clothing in 2009.
It can be seen that while the largest proportion of money spent on housing, food and transportations, the opposite was true with the rate for the others, in all four measured nations.
United States had the highest housing expenditure share, 26% of total expenditures in 2009. following by the United Kingdom, Japan and Canada, at 24%, 22% and 21%, respectively. Housing was the largest expenditure component in all countries except Japan. Meanwhile, the shares of expenditures of Japan on food were the highest at 23% compared to the rest of countries on the list. Moreover, Canada had the largest transportation share of all four countries at 20%.
the number of expenditures on health care and clothing in four countries were far lower than other categories. In term of health care, while the United Kingdom’s expenditure was the lowest, at only 2%, the figure for the United States was 7%, and for Canada and Japan was equal, with 4% per each country. There was the same proportion of expending on clothing for four countries, at around 5% for each nation.
