The graph below shows the macronutrient intake of Australians in term of kilocalories per day per person from 1909 to 2006.
The given line graph depicts the amount of carbohydrate, fat, and protein consumed by Australians over 97 years. Macronutrient consumption is measured in kilocalories.
Overall, it can be seen that carbohydrate was the most consumed macronutrient, followed by fat and then protein. The amount of carbohydrate fell slightly before increasing again, while the amount of fat had a gradual rise over the years. Protein consumption remained steady.
In 1909, the amount of carbohydrate consumption was 1400 kcal per day. While it experienced a constant fluctuation from 1929 to 1969, carbohydrate started to rise again to reach a peak in the late 1990s. By 2006, carbohydrate intake per person amounted to 1300 kcal per day. In contrast, fat followed a more linear trend over a 97-year period. There were continual fluctuations; however, the intake of fat eaten by Australians rose from below 800 kcal per day to approximately 950 kcal per day in 1909, and 1999 respectively. Comparatively, the protein was the most stable trend and barely changed over the period of 97 years. It started at just below 300 kcal per day and ended up at almost above 300 kcal per day. There was only one deviation in 1949, which lasted for several years.
