Nowadays there is a growing trend of private car ownership. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages or environmental problems associated with this?
Opinions are divided on whether the benefits of the rapid increase in private car ownership outweigh its drawbacks. I believe that the environmental impact of this trend is too serious to support its advantages.
It is a widely held belief that owning a personal car benefits humankind from being independent and individuals safety point of view. With regard to the former, being a car owner eliminates the dependency on others. This is because they don't have to rely on others to get them to a particular destination and also there is no need to adjust one's schedule to others. Turning to safety, relying on public transport and others puts one's life in the hands of someone else. While the benefit of owning a car gives you the control of driving seat. In this way, one would have more control over the speed of the car and on the outcomes of driving.
However, apart from the advantages mentioned above, the drawbacks of resource depletion and air pollution could be more severe. As for resource exhaustion is concerned, the time is not far when the world would run out of valuable resources, such as petrol and diesel. With the growing trend of private cars, the demand for these resources is increasing drastically and their quantity started falling at a rapid rate. Air pollution is another disadvantage of driving a private vehicle. Evidence for this can be seen in the fact that the harmful gases emitted from the combustion of fossil fuels would give rise to a poor air quality index.
In conclusion, although owning a personal car is advantageous, its drawbacks could not be neglected. For this reason, I believe that the risk of pollution and resource exhaustion is too severe to justify its benefits.
