TPO-33 - Integrated Writing Task
The author of the article mainly discusses three theories that explains the meaning and purpose of carved stone balls. However, the lecturer refutes these theories by contradicting statements and examples. He further explains none of the theories presented in the passage are convincing.
According to the reading passage, the carved stone balls were more likely to use as weapons for fighting and hunting. Nonetheless, the professor casts doubt on this claim and adds that if these kinds of stones were used as weapons, there should be some signs of this purpose on them such as damaging, breaking. While, except for some grooves on the surface on them, there is no signs of damaging which shows there were not use as weapons.
Moreover, regarding the reading passage, carve stone balls use as tools for measuring and weighing in the late Neolithic period. On the other hand, the professor rejects this idea reasoning that if these stones used as a part of the system of measures they should have built from different sands and rock with various weighs, while the carved stone balls built from the same rock and have the same weight, therefore, they do not meet this purpose.
Finally, in the reading passage, it was said the carved stone balls were an indicator of the social status of their owner. In contrast, the lecturer ends up saying that because of two reasons these stones could not serve a social purpose in the ancient world. First, in spite of some stone balls with an intricate pattern on them, there are some stones that have simple designs which could support this view. Second, during the Neolithic period, high-ranking people buried with their precious objects, if these stones use for such an important purpose they should be found in the graves of people. while in graves of none of these people stone balls were found.
