Repenomamus robustus (R.robustus) was not an active hunter
The writing introduces an debate whether Rempenomamus is robustus was a hunter of dinosaurs or not. The writer says that it was likely a scavenger that occasionally fed on dinosaur eggs consisting unhatched dinosaurs. The lecturer disagrees. She says that Repenomamus can potentially be the dinosaur.
First, the author says that R.robustus was too small to feed on dinosaurs - similar to a cat in size. The reading passage states, as size difference between R.robustus and psittacosaurs is too huge, therefore R.robustus would not be able to hunt down psittacosaurs or similar dinosaurs. The professor believes there are flaws in the author's position. She contends that it may be too small to hunt a fully grown dinosaur, but it can surely hunt down baby dinosaurs. She goes on to say that that many pray's are almost as big as twice in size compared to the their hunters, therefore it can be the case in this scenario as well.
According to the writer size and positioning of R.robustus's legs are not suited for hunting due to their small size and positioned below the body which reduces its speed required for hunting dinosaurs. The speaker, on the other hand, points out that modern mammal- Tasmenian Devil has the similar leg positioning and size; it can achieve speed fast anough to catch a pray. He feels that this can be the case with R.robustus as well.
Also, the reading passage notes how, there are teeth marks present on the hunted animal's body when inside the stomach, due to getting eaten by the hunter. As these teeth marks are not present in the specimen found inside R.robustus, hence it possibly did not hunt the dinosaur. The professor rebuts this argument by stating that reaading overlooks an important factor. She goes on to say that R.robustus does not use teeth to swallow teeth for pray and swallows it as a whole. She says, there is evidence to this as hind teeth of Rrobustus are not worn out.
