salvage logging
The reading and the lecture are both about a kind of methods in order to deal with the outcomes of natural disasters which happens in forests frequently, called salvaged logging. Three theories are provided in the article about approaches to counteract the consequence of these disasters. In the contrary, the professor is not convinced of the solutions and casts doubt on each of these theories. The lecturer is of the opinion that these solutions may lead to long-term damages to the forest and are not as efficient as is mentioned in the reading.
To begin with, the author argues that one way is to clean up the forest from damaged trees when it is filled totally by dead trees. To be more specific, dead trees’ decomposition is a long-lasting procedure and eliminating them free up the space for other fresh plants and trees to grow. In the lecture, this specific argument is challenged. According to the professor, annihilating destructed trees and avoiding decomposition procedure, which in spite of being long-lasting is fruitful for soil, do not provide proper condition for new trees. Furthermore, the professor asserts that decomposed organisms is necessary for new generation since it enrich soil with nutrition.
Secondly, the writer dispute that devastated trees provide insects an appropriate environment to grow and live which is harmful the health of the forest. The lecturer, on the other hand, oppose this notion by mentioning that although these trees increase the population of insects, however, they also help nestle important contributors such as birds.
Finally, the author averts that salvage logging can provide economic benefits for the community. To delineate, many industries are depended on forest’s wood for particular products and also since salvage logging requires workers, it leads to a blooming job opportunity. In contrast, the professor’s stance is that this approach brings about only small and short-term advantages. The lecturer puts forward to the idea that utilizing forest’s wood for industry requires apparatus that are extensive to maintain. Moreover, jobs that are created by salve logging are temporary and tends to hire outsider workers because they are more accomplished and adept than local human resources.
