The reading passage says about the reasons for Steller sea cows extinction but the
lecture in the listening passage challenges points in the reading passage.
The professor says that Steller sea cows' weight was about 10 tons. They were too big, heavy, so people were unable to hunt a lot of them. The first reason for their extinction was titled overhunting. Extinction is a result of large-scale hunting.
If food shortage is another reason for extinction, then other marine animals and creatures had become extinct as well. But other animals were not extinct at that time, only the Steller sea cows. The reading says when kelp began to decline, which is a kind of food, the source of food began to decrease too, which causes Steller sea cows to become extinct.
The third point is traders. Steller sea cows were extincted 1000 years before entering europian
traders in that area. It says that sea cows already had become small.
So this investigation challenges the reading's point about traders. Traders sold
cows' fur. Trading had a lot of interest and made money for them.
In conclusion, there are other reasons for their extinction.
