We have observed a gradual increase of the sea level during the last decades. It is a slow increase, and despite the alarmist attitudes of some, it is nothing to be worried about. By analyzing the data and looking into the matter clearly, we can find that this is a normal process that has happened before.
Even though we have documented a rise in the polar ice melting, this isn't the reason for the increase in the sea level. That ice is already in the water, so it displaces it already. Think of ice cubes in your glass of water, when they melt it doesn't make the water from the glass spill over. The same thing happens when the ice cap melts. Since the Ice is 90% already in water, when it goes into a liquid state, nothing drastic happens.
When it comes to the source for the increase in the sea level, we just don't know where it comes from. Many scientific agencies like NASA have stated that they simply don't know from where all this new water is coming. So it is still a great unknown to us.
The author and lecturer discuss about the rise of sea level in past decade. The author of the article feels that rising of sea level in past decade is not a matter to be worried as according to author it is a normal process. Author presents three theories to defend his/her view. The lecturer disputes it by saying that it is a matter of great concern to us. Lecturer further presents reasons to dispute the author point of views.
According to the author polar ice melting is not the reason for the rise of sea level. Author defend this specific argument by saying that polar ice is already present in the sea level and by example of ice in glass of water do not displace the water, same way polar ice in sea water do not displace it. Hence, not increase the sea level. The lecturer refutes this point by explaining about the permafrost ice which is the ice present on landmass and it do not displace anything but melting of it, increase the sea level.
Secondly, author explain that source of new water is not known, even NASA failed to provide proofs for the source of new water which is causing rise in sea level. Lecturer rebukes this point by explaining that NASA already provided study that links the increase of water level due to melting of permafrost ice.
Finally, author explain us that there is ample of time for humanity to adjust rise of sea level as it is a slow process but lecturer refutes this by explaining us that permafrost ice which is melting today due to human intervention not melt for 10000 years if no intervention from the humans but it is not the case. According to lecturer this process is happening at an alarming rate and can destroy our economy as most of economy depends on cities near ocean.
