Overall, the violent crime rate was the highest, while the number of crimes arrested was the lowest during the period shown. Also, there was a downward trend in the severe crime levels.
In the first ten years, there was a slight fluctuation in total violent crime. By about 1988, it reached its peak of nearly 4.5 offenses per thousand Americans, while the lowest record in the period given was around 3 offenses in 1980. Victimisations varied between 2 and 2.5 offenses from 1978 to 1988, while the crime recorded by police steadily rose reaching its highest in 1994, over 1.5 offenses in a thousand people in the US. The arrest rate remained the lowest, starting at around 0.3 to 0.5 offenses per 1,000.
From 1988 onwards, the figures for serious violent crime saw a gradual decrease, and so did victimisations reported to polcie. In 2000, there were 3 out of 1,000 Americans committed to violent crime, while half as many victims were reported to the police. Meanwhile, there were slight decline in the number of crimes recorded by police and arrests for violent crime.
