The dinosaurs known as sauropods were the largest animals ever to walk the Earth.
In the lecture, the professor cast doubt on the claim that sauropods were terrestrial animals, citing evidence that the ancient species may live near water.
First, while the short legs of Brachiosaurus might leave them unable to walk on land, there is fossil evidence showing footprints of Brachiosaurus on land. Moreover, some fossil tracks even indicate that this colossal animal can lift their two front legs, which is a feature of land-dwelling creatures.
Second, the long neck of Brachiosaurus may serve as a good tool for it to reach the leaves of tall trees, similar to a giraffe. Even if the weight of the neck hinders it from reaching high, simply consuming the plants the height of the dinosaur is enough due to the tall figure of it. Furthermore, since its neck is quite long, it can span a considerable range, meaning that it can take up much food with ease.
Third, Brachiosaurus does not have the suitable feet to wade in the muddy swamp. For an animal to survive in water, it needs to have short and wide legs like those of a hippo. Nonetheless, the legs of Brachiosaurus is so thin that may render it difficult walk in water.
