tp08 the accuracy of Chevalier de Seingalt's memoir
The lecture apparently refutes the point illustrated in the reading material. According to the professor, though memoirs cannot be completely correct, Seingalt's memoir is quite reliable and contains historical sources. On the contrary, the reading contends an opposite stands that several critics had raised doubts about the accuracy of the memoir written by Chevalier de Seingalt.
The first point the professor uses to cast doubt on the reading is that wealth demand to take time by converting their products into money, and the process might take a few days while Seingalt travels to Switzerland so that he demands to borrow money as his cash ran out, which differs from the statement in the reading is that although the memoir records that he was quite wealthy and spend a huge amount of money in parties and gambling, evidence has shown that he borrows money from a merchant while he was in Switzerland, which support the statement of distorting and inventing the events of his memoir and make his life more exciting.
Another evidence the speaker adopts to contradict the passage is that there was proof that Seingalt took down notes every night he had conversations with Voltaire owing to the evidence of notes and journals that assist Seingalt to finish his memoir. However, the reading states that the impossibility of him to capture and remember the details and exact parses of the conversation with Voltaire many years after doubts the accuracy of Seingalt's memoir.
In conclusion, the point made in the lecture contrasts with what is presented in the reading. As the professor claims, there are no records show that there were prisoners who obtain more powerful friends than Seingalt to bribe the prison to release them, moreover, the records which show that people demand to repair Seingalt's ceiling after he left the prison to strengthen the accuracy of his memoir, whereas the reading material holds that people consider it is more likely for Seingalt to ask his friend to bribe than escaping the prison by using a piece of metal to cut a hole in his ceiling and climb through the roof in Venice.
