One of the more serious threats facing wildlife in North America is the future of bobwhite quails.
The passage talks about how to prevent the decline of bobwhite quail’s population. Disputing the passage’s arguments, the professor cited several pieces of evidence why the methods proposed in the passage may not be useful.
First, she states that to restore the bird’s population, we need to reserve a connected a region instead of isolated farm areas as the passage argued. Biologists have found that bobwhite quail can not survive in small areas but can only thrive in a large habitat. Specifically, we need to incorporate pre-existing farmland with region of borders to form a wider region for the species to thrive.
Second, the professor doesn’t think that banning hunting will have much effect on quail’s population since hunting is not the major cause behind the significant decline of the bird's population. Therefore, even if we ban hunting entirely, quail population will continue to decrease. Instead, restoring the bird’s nesting habitat is much more crucial.
Third, dismissing the passage’s argument that we can restore quail’s population by breeding and releasing quail artificially, the professor argues that the genetic inferiority of household quail may well make the situation worse. Since domestic quail suffer from inbreeding, they have inferior genetics as opposed to that of the natural quail. Therefore, releasing this kind of species into the wild will only decrease the genetic integrity of wild quail, thus doing more harm to the already endangered quail population.
