living on Mars
The reading and the lecture are both about the possibility of living or constant presence of human on Mars. Actually, the author provides three challenges that humans will encounter in the case of living on Mars. On the other hand, the professor is not convinced of this and casts doubt on each of the reasons presented in the passage. Personally, he is on the opinion that although human permanent residence on Mars is challenging, however, since the condition is much more favorable at higher levels, it can be possible by putting a station floating in the atmosphere, at 50 Km higher than the Mars surface.
To begin with, the author argues that the pressure on Mars' surface is as high as force of 100 Kg on each square, which is enough high to crush almost anything. The professor, in contrast, opposes this notion by asserting that pressure is much lower in this higher levels of atmosphere. Hence, no peril threaten human beings as long as the station is floated 50 Km higher than the surface of Mars.
Secondly, the writer disputes that there is not any resource of water or oxygen on Mars' surface. Moreover, it continues that exporting water and O2 from Earth to Mars constantly is not plausible. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. Therefore, he averts that CO2 and SO2, which are abundant on Mars, can be converted to water and oxygen in the station by utilizing chemical material.
Finally, the author asserts that merely little sunlight can enter the Mars' surface owing to the high rate of sunlight reflection by thick clouds in the atmosphere. Additionally, it states that even more lights will be blocked by dense layer of CO2, which all prevent us from using solar energy as electricity. The lecture's stance is that clouds at 50 Km higher than Mars' surface is less thick which allows more sunlight penetrating. Also, the professor mentions that some special machines in the station are capable of utilizing reflected energy by clouds in order to yield electricity.
