elephants behavior
The reading and the lecture are both about the fascinating features of elephants. Actually, the writer describes three bahavior of elephants. On the other hand, the lecturer is not convinced of each of this, and casts doubt on each the interpretations mentioned in the passage. Point to the other side of the story, the professor is of the opinion that these results are merely due to misunderstanding the elephants' behavior, and having categorically rejects all the descriptions, she explains the reasons.
To commence, both the passage and the lecture put forth to the idea of awareness of one's death. In this vein the author argues that elephants can perceive that they are near to death, therefore, they relinquish their herds and pass their left time in places near water, so called "elephants graveyard". This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. According to the professor, elephants leave the herd in the terminate span of their life owing to the fact that their teeth will be eroded and they have to feed on softer vegetation which are easier to be engulphed. Moreover, the speaker claims that since these soft vegetation are found near water, the old elephants often graze near water and eventually die there.
secondly, the writer disputes that elephants have artistic ability , and are capable of paint on canvas while holding brush with their trunk. Also, it is mentioned in the passage that elephants can paint recognizable objects embodied the realistic environment. The lecture, on the other hand, opposes this notion by asserting that trainers control elephants deceptively by their ear which is very sensitive. She elaborates on this by stating that trainers touch their ear to remember the patterns that elephants has learned and inspire them to repeat the patterns and shapes. So, these animals just draw what they have been thought, not conceived.
Finally both the lecture and the article talks about the elephants' fear of mice. In this line of thought the writer discusses that elephants have fear of mice other than hazardous creatures adjacent to their environment such as lions. Moreover, the passage averts that this idea have proven by a scientific experiment to endorse his claim. Contrary to the author, the speaker's stance is that elephants are frightened of what is unknown to them. However, they do not have fear from familiar creatures present in their natural habitat. Therefore, once elephants encounter mice and get touch to them, they will not have fear of them anymore.
