The pie chart shows the number of people who were using different languages online. The table shows the average number of people online each year. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The pie chart provides information about the proportion of different languages which are used by around 529 million on the internet in December of 2001. Meanwhile, the table gives detail about how many people, on average, use the internet each year from 1997 to 2001.

Overall, there is little connection between the two charts. Western languages were prominent on the internet in 2001, where there was only one-tenth of the population have internet access. It is also noticeable that the number of internet users increased dramatically throughout the period.

In 2001, English was the most used language online, while Dutch was the least on the chart. In order words, almost half of the internet users (43%) preferred English, this figure was twentieth-fold Dutch which was 2.1%. Next to Dutch, only 5% higher, was the second-least used language on the table chart, Portuguese. Whilst ranked second and third, were Eastern languages, Japanese and Chinese, with 8.9% and 8.8% respectively, meanwhile, Korean users were about a half of these figures. German proportion was 6.8%, this number was 3% higher than Spanish and almost equal to Italian and French combined.

Regarding the table, in 1997, the number of citizens who had access to the internet was surprisingly low with just under 2% of the world population. However, in the next year, with 147 million users, this number was doubled. Between 1999 and 2001, there was a dramatic increase from 195 million people online to half a billion, that is to say, 8,4% of the world population.
