Nowadays, families are not as close as in the past and a lot of people have become used to this.
Why is this happening?
Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the drawbacks?
It is incredibly common for modern families to not have a strong familial bonding with each other when compared to the families of yesteryear. There are two major reasons for this development. Although there are some positives to this trend, in my opinion, it is an overwhelmingly negative.
To being with, the fast paced contemporary life might be the the primary reason behind families not having a deeper bond. Because of a hectic work schedule, people may be left with less time to spend quality time with their dear ones; resulting in a weaker development of personal relationships. People may even eschew working over the weekend to earn more money in favor of going on a vacation with family. Another possible reason is immigrating to another country. With globalisation, numerous people are migrating to foreign places, either to work or study. Thus, the geographical distance between may lead to the weakning of bonds because they will not be able to frequenlty meet each other or attend family functions. These circumstances, therefore, are causing families to lose their bondage.
There are two benefits of having not so close contact. To being with, it gives personal space to individuals. In other words, people have the space to do whatever they want without any interference of family members. For instance, single people may date openly as their parents do not hold any sway over their life. Furthermore, people may extricate themselves from family commitments, such as birthdays, anniversaries, or holidays. Since families have become more tolerant of such behaviors, they would not mind if someone do not want to attend a family gathering. Thus, people may have more time on hand to do other things.
Despite the above mentioned advantages, the disadvantages are serious. Firstly, people may feel isolated or go astray should family members are not available to give moral support or guidance. This can cause psychological harm to the well-being of individuals. Secondly, the tradeoff related to social values is an alarming concern. People may develop anti-social behaviour and stop respecting others around them. This is deleterious not just to individuals but also to society. Lastly, communication skill may be on the decline. People may forgot how to speak with families or can get easily annoyed by a mere cynical remark from a family member.
To conclude, although having far-apart families have some upsides, such as personal growth and free time, they do not outweight the downside, namely psychological problems, a decline of social manners, and unpolite speaking manners. People should, therefore, make time for their families so they do not suffer any consequences.
