The bar chart shows the share of poverty of the rural areas in the years 1993 and 2002. The pie chart shows the rural area share and the urban area share of poverty in 2002.
The bar chart illustrate the rural share of poverty in 6 different regions for the year 1993 and 2002. The pie chart shows the differences in the percentage of poverty for the urban and the rural class. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the percentage of poverty in rural areas gradually decreased from 1993 to 2002. It is also evident that the number of people living a poor life are more in coutryside than in the city.
To begin with, the proportion of poverty remained the same in East Asia and Pacific for both the years( 90% in 1993 and 90% in 2002). However, the poverty share in the Middle East and North Africa experienced a fall in 2002 as compared to that in 1993. It was around 85% in 1993 whereas in the next 9 years, this share slighty dropped to 80%. The poverty share of both, the South Asia and the Sub-Saharan Africa region remained the same in 1993(approximately 88%). However, this rate seems to have fallen to around 70% for the later in the year 2002 while it dropped by only 1% for the former.
Furthermore, the lowest poverty rate recorded in 1993 was in Europe and Central Asia, it was 50%. However, this rate spiked to 65% in 2002. Similar kind of situation was observed for the region of Latin America and Carribean, which had poverty percentage around 50%, but this time this percentage went down and landed at 40% in 2002. The poverty rates for the rural area were more than double than that of the urban area. It was 76% for rural area and only 24% for the urban area.
