Essay topics:

The graph shows in percentage terms the changing patterns of domestic access to modern technology in homes in the UK.

The provided line graph illustrates information on the proportion of using advanced technologies namely CD player, mobile phone, Internet access and home computer in British households over the course of 7 years, commencing from 1996 to 20/3.

As can be seen from the graph, it is evidently clear that the percentage of domestic access to technology in the UK at home witnessed an upward trend over the period shown. In addition, Internet access increased sharply in its contribution compared to the others.

In 1996/97, the figure for CD players, mobile phones and home computers accounted for 60%, 19% and 24% respectively, showing that CD players were the most accessible in UK households. In contrast, no one had access to the Internet in this period. In the next years, CD players and home computers rose constantly, especially CD players still kept the highest position and reached a point of approximately 80% in 2002/03 in comparison with the percentage of three categories. There was a wide fluctuation in the proportion of mobile phones usage and then climbed to about 65% and surpassed home computer. Additionally, Internet access appeared in 1998/99 and went up steadily about 42% at the end of the year 2002/03.
