Many people dream of owning their own business but are afraid of
the risks. Instead of starting a new business, however, one can buy a
franchise. A franchise is a license issued by a large, usually well-known,
company to a small business owner. Under the license, the owner
acquires the right to use the company’s brand name and agrees to sell its
products. In return, the franchising company receives a percent of the
sales.
A major problem for first-time business owners is finding reliable
suppliers of the goods and services they need: equipment, raw materials,
maintenance, etc. It is easy to choose the wrong supplier, and doing so
can be costly. Buying a franchise eliminates much of this problem. Most
franchising companies have already found reliable suppliers, and
franchise contracts typically specify which suppliers are to be used. This
protects franchise owners from the risk of serious losses.
Another advantage of a franchise is that it can save a new business a
lot of money on advertising. Advertising one’s product to potential
customers is a crucial factor in a business’s success. A franchise owner,
however, sells an already popular and recognized brand and also gets the
benefit of sophisticated and expensive advertising paid by the parent
company.
Finally, a franchise offers more security than starting an independent
(nonfranchise) business. The failure rate for starting independent
businesses is very high during the first few years; the failure rate for
starting franchises is much lower. Finding one’s own way in today’s
competitive business environment is difficult, and buying a franchise
allows an inexperienced business owner to use a proven business model.
The reading article and the lecture both discuss about the franchise business, wherein a temporary license is issued by already established business entrepreneurs to small owners. The author in the passage suggests that franchise business really serves initial business owners who has the willingness to start business but are intimidated by the risks that accompanies every starting business. The lecture disputes such claim suggesting that franchise business brings greater losses to people, rather they could earn more gains from starting of their own individual business. Various reasons stated by the passage to establish its claim are opposed by the lecturer in several ways.
Firstly, the author mentions that franchise business provides initial owners with an already set list of bonafide suppliers which prevents them from getting cheated in the initial stages. But the lecturer refutes such claim stating that in franchise business the owners are limited to buy only certain particular goods and services as prescribed by the franchise which are mostly expensive and prevents them from buying cost effective inputs from other suppliers.
Secondly, the reading passage stipulates that business owners can save advertisement cost because the franchise already advertises their products. However the lecturer states that the first time owners has to bear 6% of total sales which aggregates to be much more than the cost they could bear for advertisement of their own goods for their own business rather that franchisee brand.
Finally, author put forth that franchisee are secured enough as they already have established goodwill in the market. But the lecturer opposes such view stating that an alternative study shows buying established business from some owners eager to sell their set up business can fetch more profit than franchise and in the first 4 years that business can really be run by the owner in its own name.
