In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day.
The passage here discusses a propsal for a mandatory policy of an option for employees to work for 4 days per week with 80% of the usual pay. The author says that it will be beneficial for both the companies and their employees. The lecturer disagrees. He says that it will not be beneficial for both of them and attacks the claims made by the author.
Firstly, the passage says that companies will increase their profits if they put this policy in effect. It states that since employees will be less overworked they are less prone to make errors. The lecturer points out some flaws in the passage and says that it will not affect the profit made by the companies. If people opt for 4 day work week, then companies will have to hire more people to make up for their work and that will come at some additional costs. The company will have to spend money on thei training and medical beneficts for the extra employees it will hire. Furthermore, companies will also have to accomodate more office space for these extra employees. This will again incur additional cost and will balance out the money, a company saves by adopting this policy.
Secondly, the passage mentions that employement rate will decrease if this policy is put into effect because more people can be hired to make up for the people opting for 4 day work week. The lecturer refutes these claims. He says that apart from the fact that hiring new workers is costly, the companies might expect people opting for 4 day work week to work harder to make up for the time lost. Apart from that, companies' expectations might change from their employees; companies might expect them to work overtime making the life of the employees opting for 4 day work week unpleasant. So this policy might not create additional jobs as stated in the passage.
Thirdly, the passage states that people opting for this policy can be benefitted as they will have some additional time and can use it according to their needs. The lecturer disagrees. He says that there is a risk of reducing the quality of life for these employees as their job statbility will decrease compared to the employees opting to work for 5 days a week. Employees opting for 4 day work week might be the first one to lose their job in a situation of an economic turmoil. Apart from that, people opting for 5 day work week will be preferred for management roles as they have consistent coverage about the company working.
Thus, the lecturer disagrees with the reading passage and says that having the policy of a 4 day work week will be harmful to both companies and their employees.
