The diagrams below show how houses can be protected in areas which are prone to flooding.
The given figure illustrates the protection solutions for the houses which easily catch the flood.
From an overall perspective, they mention two ways to deter the flood spill into the building. It is evident that stopbank plays a vital role in preventing flood from river and drain or we can upgrade the floor level. Moreover, there are a range of elements in this mission such as berm, floodgate and freebord which construct to a stopbank.
According to the first solution, the 100-year flood level hardly spill out and access the resident building thanks to the advent of stopbank. When it is rain, water may run down the slope and create the internal ponding. This ponding will release to the river and drain thorugh the holes of floodgate. In this case, the level of water may be reduced and 100-year flood level rarely transcend the slope in order to protect the house from flooding.
Moving to the second method, instead of construct a stopbank, we can raise the length of building. Although the 100-year flood may overspill, the house still in secure and get out of the flooding situation. There are a standard freeboard estimated nearly 300mm between the building and the water level. Finally, it is stated that both of these solutions can help the house stay out of flooding and in secured condition.
