The diagrams below show how houses can be protected in areas that are prone to flooding.
Write a report for a university, lecturer describing the information shown below.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and making comparisons where relevant.
The illustrations reveal the mechanisms of keeping the buildings in vulnerable areas secured from flooding.
In overview, two common patterns to avert flooding due to the internal runoff regards the utilization of a stopbank. Even though both methods require the lift of the house floor level, the height of used stilts can be minimized with the addition of the stopbank.
In the first case, the stopbank serves as the flood barrier to shield the buildings against the elevating level of a nearby river or drain. It is a small mound of land between the houses and the river, which is higher than the 100-year flood level of that river, creating an internal pond. In order to regulate the amount of water inside that internal pond, the berm and floodgate are applied to direct the runoff water back to the river. Therefore, the houses are merely constructed to be upper the level of the internal ponding.
With regard to the absence of the stopbank, the houses in the flood-prone areas are facing the flood level of the nearby river directly, without any barrier. As a solution, the floor level of the buildings is required towering stilts to be raised. For safety concerns, their height should exceed the 100-year flood level of 300mm, considered the freeboard.
