Summarize the points made in the lecture being sure to explain how they oppose specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading passage talks about altruism which is a selfless act to benefit others. According to the passage, it can be observed in both humans and animals. In humans, acts such as sharing food with strangers or donating body organs to family or even to strangers are considered altruistic acts. Secondly, in animals such as Meerakats, one of the individual acts as a standing guard whose duty is to inform others about any threats that may attack them. While others in the group hunt for food or eat the food they have hunted, the stand guard is looking for potential threats by risking his own life. Further, in case of danger, they are the most vulnerable ones because the group can fight the threat together whereas it can be an easy target because it is alone. However, the lecture opposes these and the points are mentioned below.
To begin with, the lecture mentions that a new methods of study can question older methods and may need earlier results to be reexamined. Suppose for instance, human acts such as that of donating organs to a family member or even to a complete stranger may seem a selfless act but there are a lot on non matrialistic benefits from these acts which need to be taken into account. For instance, the appreciation received by the stranger or approval received by the society which leads to increase in self worth also need to be considered. When these are taken into account, the categorization of the act as altruistic might be called into question.
Similar observations are made for Meerkat. As suggested by the lecture, recent deeper studies suggest that group of Meerkat usually eats before stand guard. This means that the individual that stand guards usually has full stomach. Furthermore, the individual who is acting as a sentinel is usually standing closer to the burrows. Hence, if there are any threats approaching the group such as a hawk, they can immediately escape and hide in the burrows while the group struggles for it. Not only that, the others in the group are in greater danger than the individual. This is because, the group can draw predator's attention leading it to the group first instead of the individual.
Hence, based on the above points, it is clear that the lecture opposes the points made in the reading passage.
