dinosaurs
The passage adopts facts about endotherms, and gives three reasons why dinosaurs were considered as endotherms. However, none of the reasons survive the further scrutiny of the lecture.
First things first, the passage claims that the dinosaur fossils’ presence indicates that dinosaurs can survive harshly cold climates, which simultaneously tallies with one of the traits of endotherms. To refute that, the professor says that the polar regions before were not as cold as they are today, at least they were warm enough for the dinosaurs to live. Furthermore, during the harsh winters, there is a possibility that some dinosaurs actually migrate to warmer regions. Therefore, relying on fossils alone, we can't infer the moves of dinosaurs, and we won't know whether they have the characteristics of endotherms.
Secondly, the lecturer asserts that the passage is baseless to say that the positioning of dinosaurs’ legs can suggest they are endotherms. She says that dinosaurs had legs under their bodies to support their huge weights, not to provide them body structures of an endotherm. With the legs under their bodies, dinosaurs can grow into a very large size. In short, the functions of these short legs are unrelated to running and similar activities of the dinosaurs.
After proving the first to reasons wrong, the lecturer deals with the last claim of the passage. Dinosaur bones contained Haversian canals, which allow for fast bone growth. These traits are typical of endotherms. However, the lecturer explains that other than the canals, dinosaur bones also had features from animals other than endotherms. The bones particularly contain growth rings, which identify the fact that the dinosaurs grow in a very slow rate, which is typical of other animals.
All in all, the professor challenges the passage by giving reasons as to why she thinks dinosaurs are not endotherms.
