The graph below shows the consumption of 3 spreads from 1981 to 2007.
Given in the line graph is the illustration of how much 3 types of spread were consumed over a 26-year period between 1981 and 2007. All the units are measured in grams.
Overall, what is striking from the graph is that low fat and reduced spreads saw a dramatic increase, while the others went down over the time period covered by the graph. At the beginning of the period, butter was the most popular spread, which was replaced by margarine from 1991 to 2001, and following this, low fat and reduced spreads became the most widely used spread in the final years.
In 1981, the amount of butter and margarine started at 140 and about 85 grams respectively. Following this, the figure for butter increased and then significantly went down to 100 in 1991, but the opposite pattern was recorded for the figure for maragine, which is equal to that for butter in 1991. After 1991, butter and margarine traded places and gradually declined to under 60 grams in 2007.
On the other hand, having only begun in 1996 at about 10, the figure for low fat and reduced spreads then witnessed a rapid rise to peak at over 80. Eventually, the figure steadily dropped to about 65 at the end of the period.
