The line graphs depict the trends for percentage of households with electrical equipment and average weekly hours spent on chores in one country over the period of 100 years.
It is clear that the proportion of households with electrical appliances rose considerably between 1920 and 2019, and refrigerator saw the most dramatic increase in that period. By contrast, the number of hours of housework fell significantly over the same timescale as a result.
In the year 1920, the percentage of washing machine and vacuum cleaner was 40% and 30% respectively, while the number of houses with refrigerator stood at approximately 0%. Over the following 40 years, however, the figure for the electrical equipment rose quickly to 90% and overtook those for washing machine and vacuum cleaner, with the same proportion of 70%. The figures for two types of tool increased gradually in the later period and reached to 100% in 1980 for refrigerator and 1990 for vacuum cleaner. The number of washing machine used in households fell slightly in 1980 and stood at nearly 75% in the end of period.
Looking at the average weekly hours that household spent on chores, there was a dramatic decrease can be seen between 1920 and 1960. In 1920, the figure was 50 hours but fell to 20 hours over the 40-year period, and finally down to just over 10 hours in 2019.
