The line graph illustrates the proportion of people living in urban areas in Phillipines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia between 1970 and 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040.
Overall, the figure for urban residents in four Asian countries increased from 1970 and 2020 and is expected to continue growing in 2030 and 2040. Although the number of citizens in Malaysia left behind Phillipines in 1970 and 1990, almost all the time the proportion of the population who living in cities in Malaysia achieved the highest.
On one hand, the figure for urban population in Malaysia and Indonesia have witnessed the continuous increasing trend over the period in question. Both of these countries experienced a significant rise from 1970 and 1990, by about 15% to 45% in 1990 and by 10% to just below 25% in 1990, respectively. After that, the percentage of Malaysia increased sharply before reaching a peak of approximately 85% in 2040, overtaking Phillipine to become the highest. Similarly, the figure for Indonesia also reached a peak of nearly 60% in 2040, overtaking Phillipines and Thailand to become the second highest, just behind Malaysia.
On the other hand, the percentage of urban population in Phillipines and Thailand experienced a slightly increase between 1970 and 2040. In 1990, both two countries increased significantly, with 20% rise to 50% in Phillipines, and 10% rise to nearly 30% in Thailand. Between 1990 and 2020, while Phillipines slightly fluctuated from 50% to just above 40%, the figure for Thailand remained the same. In 2040, the two countries are expected a slight increase, Phillipines reaches its old peak of 50% and Thailand continuely increased by about 10% to 40%.
