The line graph gives information about the number of stores that closed down and recently opened stores one country from 2011 to 2018. Overall, it can be seen that the number of shop closures and openings decreased by the end of the given period. In addition, both categories show a fluctuating trend.
In 2011, the number of boutiques that closed stood at over 6,000 and also fluctuated between roughly 6,000 and 7,000 boutiques during the first two years of the period, reaching a peak of just over 7,000. The figure of outlets that closed began to steadily fall to under 7,000 in 2014; thereafter, it began to suddenly decline, reaching a low of under 1,000 outlets in 2015. Furthermore, it began to rapidly rise to just over 5,000 in the following year and remained steady at this level from 2016 to 2018.
On the other hand, the number of stores that opened stood at above 8,000 in 2011, which resulted in 2,000 net openings. It began to dramatically fall, reaching a low of just below 4,000 in 2012. Starts rebounded, reaching nearly the same level as closings in 2014 at just over 6,000, after which the number of opened stores dropped again to its 2012 level in 2015, where it remained constant until it fell further to an all-time low at 3,000 in 2018.
