While spare time can be used to explore diverse courses related to a student's field of study, taking courses outside the field will limit a student's time and focus. For instance, for a computer science student, taking a variety of courses apart from the central subject distracts from his or her main objective leading to inadequate knowledge of programming. This incompetence could negatively impact their job prospects.
Further, every field of study is extensive, providing room for growth and expertise. Studying a wide range of courses outside one's major could hinder a student from mastering critical concepts. This limits the creation of new knowledge, which is necessary for any subject to remain current and meet the changing world trends. Limiting courses to one's main area of study helps to develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and expertise.
However, fundamental courses such as math skills, language skills, sociology, and accounting classes are essential and should be included in the curriculum to strengthen the student's main field of study. For instance, an engineering student may benefit from studying sociology to understand the societal impact of engineering.
In conclusion, students should only take courses outside their field of study if they support their major courses' learning objectives. Students should focus mainly on their primary courses to become competent professionals in their field of study. Nonetheless, fundamental courses complementing their primary field of study can aid in their career growth and should be incorporated where necessary.
