People are living in a ‘throwaway society,’ using things for a short time and then throwing them away. What are the causes of this? What problems does it lead to?
Nowadays, more and more people use items for short periods and after that, they throw the things away. This essay will address the factors contributing to this phenomenon and propose viable solutions to deal with this matter.
Many people are unaware of the consequences of dumping a way their items as they never receive proper information about this issue. To deal with this problem, the governmental body should act quickly to increase people's awareness about the negative effects of throwing away things. Placing a board containing messages related to the downside effects of consumerism, in various places, such as shopping centers or markets, for instance, is an effective solution. This way, whenever people want to buy new things, they have to reconsider it, and eventually, there will be no additional pieces of stuff to be dumped.
Another possible variable is the economic factor. Stuff, such as clothes are much more affordable in this era in comparison to decades ago. With a limited amount of money, people are able to buy several sets of new clothes, leading to a consumerism lifestyle. To solve this issue, the government has to impose high taxes on consumer goods, such as clothes. Thus, the number of goods that can be purchased is limited and fewer things will end up as waste.
To sum up, factors such as unawareness about its negative consequences and the decreasing economic value of consumer goods are the two most important variables contributing to the phenomenon. Therefore, to tackle this problem approaches such as educating people and imposing higher taxes are possible solutions.
