The first chart illustrates some changes about marriage and divorce rates from 1970 to 2000 in USA. The second chart presents the marital status of American adults at the same time.
From the first chart it can be seen that the number of marriages and divorces stood in 2.5 million and 1 million, respectively in 1970. The proportion of marriages were stable in 1980, although fell to 2 million by 2000. In contrast, the number of divorces peaked in 1980 (nearly 1.5 million) before falling back to 1 million at the end of period.
Regarding the second chart, one can say that the proportion of married persons were 70 % in 1970 and just under 60 % in 2000. Whilst the percentage of adults in never married and divorced sectors rose to 20% and approximately 10%, respectively in 2000. In addition the percentage of adult Americans who were widowed decreased slightly.
By and large, marriage rates of American adults dropped between 1970 and 2000. Besides, the majority of adult Americans were married, however, single adults grew up by the year 2000.
