The graph below gives information about the percentage of the population in four Asian countries living in cities from 1970 to 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040.
The line chart illustrates the proportion of urban residents in four Asian nations between 1970 and 2020, with projections until 2040.
Overall, the chart shows that after fifty years, the number of people who move to live in cities in these four countries increased sharply and this trend will continue till 2040. Additionally, Malaysia dominates the chart for the vast majority of the period and Indonesia is predicted to take over the Philippines to rank in the top 2.
Regarding the Philippines and Malaysia, the percentage of the population living in cities in the Philippines was a little more than in Malaysia, which was about 32% and 30% respectively. These two countries witnessed a slight fluctuation in their percentages until 30 years later, Malaysia officially overtook the Philippines with approximately 60%. The proportion still arose 20 years after that and is claimed to continually rise till 2030, which will be about 80%. In terms of the Phillippines, although there was a slight decrease, the number quickly increased again and will keep rising to 2040 with about 55%.
Moving on to Thailand and Indonesia, from 1970 to 2000, Thailand was the third-ranked nation that had a large number of residents living in urban regions with about 30%. Also in this period, Indonesia’s percentage was roughly 12% in 1970 and 30% in 2000, standing in the fourth rank. Yet, after 2000, Indonesia and Thailand had swapped their positions in the graph. In the end, Indonesia was standing in the top three and is predicted to overtake the Phillippines and Thailand soon which will be over 60% in 2040. On the contrary, Thailand will turn out to be the nation that has the lowest number of citizens living in urban zones with nearly 50%.
