Some people think advertisements may have positive economic effects whereas others think there are negative social effects because individuals are not satisfied with who they are and what they have. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
People have sparked a controversy over the influence of promotional campaigns on society. While its opponents believe in its detrimental impact on the mental well-being of various populations, I would argue that advertising remains a useful tool for business.
On the one hand, it is undeniable that human’s psyche can be negatively affected by advertisements. To begin with, when a product breaks into market, most firms tend to associate it with beauty, success or perfection, and consumers may subliminally form a distorted view about the prerequisite of fulfillment due to an exposure to such contents. Consequently, an inferiority complex may arise, in which individuals are pressured to conform to the so-called societal ideals. Nevertheless, in many circumstances, the public has been entitled to block or skip commercials, as we see on online platforms like Facebook or Youtube. Therefore, it is consumers themselves who mostly control whether they are swayed by advertisements, so solely attributing their mental problems to them may be unconvincing.
On the other hand, despite the above drawbacks, it seems to me that the positive contributions of promotion to business success are more significant. In fact, as technological advancements have been increasingly applied to manufacture, the market is becoming saturated with homogenous products, whereas advertising, in which each company utilises a distinct technique, can enable them to reveal their uniqueness, gain a competitive edge and boost sales. For example, no sooner had Aba, a Vietnamese detergent brand, poured money into TV commercials, than its revenue edged out that of competitors, which only used classified ads or promotional flyers. In fact, the success of an enterprise can also be explained by other factors, such as budget management. However, advertisement caters to creating brand awareness, so their role in creating brand awareness and motivating purchases can be seen as indispensable.
In conclusion, although the harmful psychological effect of promotion has been widely acknowledged, I opine that they are pale in comparison with its economic benefits.
