The reading claims that Dams are incredible engineering marvels that represent one of the most beneficial and effective forms of electricity creation today. It provides three reasons of support. In contrast, the professor states that more research and development is necessary and it poses many drawbacks. He refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the article avers that dams have a positive impact on the environment. On the other hand, the lecturer opposes this point by saying that environment does suffer. He says that during construction of dams, the water will be diverted and this significant affects the migratory of fish. When they finish construction, the flow of water will be slow and this hurts the productivity of fish since they need fast flow to lay their eggs.
Second, the passage asserts that the power generated from a dam produces no harmful pollutants. Conversely, the professor casts doubt on this point by stating that the power generated from dams contributes to add pollutants. In fact, he mentions that the artificial lakes around the dams flood periodically as a result plants die and these died plants rots over time. Mehtane, which is a global wrmaning gas, is released from the dead plants. In addition plants remove carbon dioxide, another global gas. So, dams will destroy the plants and add methane.
Third, the article posits that dams create no financial burden for the community. However, the lecture counters this point by saying that the economy does suffer. The professor informs that enormous artificial lakes were created and these lakes flooded around the area, therefore the residents in that ares must be relocated. This is not cheap at all. The government should spend a lot of money to fix the construction and the economy will be affected.
