Essay topics:

People become more materialistic. Discuss

Can you imagine living without money? Is it possible to live without money in this cash-driven world? It has been said that money makes the world goes round. Hate to point out the obvious but it is true. In today's world where consumerism is rather rampant, materialism has become the social norm and making money has become the central focus of most people. People has become more materialistic in nature and some of them even abandon humanitarian values in the pursuit of wealth. This bodes ill for the nation, especially when materialism greases the wheels of evil operations such as human trafficking or corruption. Given the centrality of the issue at hand, it is highly appropriate for us to scrutinise the reasons why people nowadays are more materialistic and such information will steer us away from ignorance, as cited by Martin Luther, “Nothing in this world is much more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”

To begin with, each individual is affected by materialism to some extent in this day and age because hedonism is becoming an uprising trend. Highly materialistic people often think erroneously that wealth brings happinness to their lives. Consequently, they are geared towards making more money so that they can lead a carefree lifestyle, which is quite popular nowadays. In this case, we could see that materialism overrides human's common sense and clouds one's judgement. People who sink into the dark pit of materialism may sideline the things which matter the most in their life, namely family relationship, friendship or health when their material desire is given more attention above all else. Ironically, they do not have enough time to spend the wealth they have or simply enjoy leisure time due to heavy workload. While hedonism spurs them to work hard to bring in more income in order to live a luxurious lifestyle, materialism on the other hand stirs the feelings of vanity in human themselves.

It may be said without fear of contradiction that peer pressure also joins hand in provoking materialism in human. In a sense, all and sundry has a desire to fit in, whether of school, work or in social circles. For this reason, people tend to purchase branded goods that either perceived as fashionable, trendy or high class or that fit into a particular subculture or peer group. They believe that branded items are symbols of status and wealth which will contribute to greater acceptance.
Furthermore, peer influence has a direct bearing to our self-esteem. We feel confident if we are being accepted by our friends and we feel humilated if we are being ostracised. Therefore, many people tend to spend beyond their means for branded items which they actually could not afford. Ugly rears it head when they slip into the vicious cycle of debt and grapple with all sorts of financial difficulties. Needless to say, it is the “keeping up with the Joneses” which is indirectly caused by peer pressure that epitomizes materialism in our society.

In addution, development of manifold electronic and daily usage gadgets have germinated germinated a desire of prosperity among denizens. Everyday, we are bombarded with a myriad of advertisment of the latest branded items, for instance the Iphone, genuine LV bags, snazzy leather shoes and the like. Markets are utilising a slew of promotional gimmicks to seduce consumers to purchase their products. As a mattrr of fact, they often target on children as they know children easily get fascinated towards unrealistic belongings. As a corollary, children may become materialistic in nature and they tend to demand the branded items from their parents. If their parents do not satisfy their material wants, some of them even resort to channels which flout the law in order to obtain the material items they want. For instance , they may involve themselves in petty theft or larceny. Hence, it is crystal clear to claim that the exposure to media inculcates the spirit of materialism in modern man, especially children who are susceptible to external influences.

It is indeed a sad reality that people nowadays become more materialistic and are loaded with pratical money making ideas but with few scruples. In this context of discussion, parents should play the pivotal role of educating their children spend their money judiciously and lead a frugal lifestyle. They government should join hands in organising campaigns as to mitigate the spirit of materialism which is rampant in our society. Janwillem Van De Wetering once cited, “Greed is a fat demon with a small mouth and whatever you feed it is never enough.” Indisputably, materialism turns human into ugly creatures with loads of pratical money making ideas but few scruples. Bearing in mind, success is not measured in the amount of dollars you make, but rather the amount of lives you impact. Wealth can never be the yardstick of one's success, so do not be the slave of money and start to pursue a meaningful and fulfilled life.
