Essay topics:

Your class has attended a panel discussion on how to influence people to be more environmentally friendly. You have made the notes below:
Ideas for influencing people to be more environmentally friendly:
• laws and taxes
• education
• media.
Some opinions expressed in the discussion:
‘Governments should make people pay if they damage the environment.’
‘Schools and parents should teach children to respect the environment from a very early age.’
‘News programmes can tell people how important these issues are.’

Write an essay for you tutor discussing two of the ideas for influencing people in your notes. You should explain which way would be more effective and provide reasons to support your opinion. You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the discussion, but you should use your own words as far as possible.

Environmental issues have long been making headlines. But still people seem to struggle to realize the significance of the problems caused by human activity.
But how can we build up the right attitude towards the environment and encourage more environmentally friendly behaviour?
This essay is going to discuss two possible ways to these pressing, and yet complex issues.

To begin with, authority should take charge of the environment by implementing taxes for damaging the nature. People might be well aware of the aggravating problems with air pollution and household waste disposal. In spite of this fact, people do not pursue the idea of restricting their activity in favour of the environment as it might be time and energy consuming.
Only when people start paying for contaminating rivers and negligent attitude towards nature is it possible to change the world for the better.

Just as important, youngsters should be taught about the consequences of the indifferent attitude towards environment at schools as well as at home.
Not only is it of vital importance to give lessons on environmental topics but also engage adolescence to take part in voluntary projects and carry out researches. For example, students may conduct a research into the detrimental effects on the environment and come up with possible solutions.

Taking into account the above discussed ideas of influencing people to become more environmentally friendly, one may conclude that either option may be a step in the right direction. But the most significant one seems to be educating children from the early age as it is more likely to have a long-term solution.
