Professor:
As discussed in class, knowing history is essential for understanding
the present and shaping the future. It provides us with a sense of
identity and helps us to understand the complexities of the world we
live in. It also helps us to develop critical thinking skills, as we learn
to analyze and interpret historical events and their impact on
society. Before next class, I would like you to discuss this question:
Should studying history be made compulsory for all university
students, regardless of their main field of study? Why?

Amy:
I would definitely say that all university students regardless of their
major should be required to study history. History teaches us about
the successes and failures of past societies, and the lessons we can
learn from them. Additionally, studying history promotes empathy
and understanding of different cultures and perspectives. By making
history a compulsory subject, universities can ensure that all
students have a well-rounded education and become informed and
engaged citizens.

Jeremy:
I hold a different view from Amy and believe that not every college
student should learn history. While history provides valuable insights
into the past, it may not be relevant or necessary for students
pursuing certain fields of study. For example, a student studying
engineering may not benefit from studying ancient civilizations. Also,
forcing students to study history may lead to disinterest and lack of
engagement, ultimately defeating the purpose of education.

From my perspective, the advantages of study history definitely outweigh its disadvantages. As a person that I had history courses during my school I am very happy to learn many things about our past generations, others era culture, past people’s ways of thinking, and more importantly the process that my country has passed to became such a wonderful country. It is taken for granted that without participating in history classes, I would never have learnt all this information. It is noteworthy that history can equip us with a wonderful weapon, knowledge and experience, to prevent from making mistakes and facing with some unpleasant consequences of making a bad decision in facing with some challenges. I would like to add that study history of other nations gives us many valuable information about their culture and customs which paves the way to have more effective communications with them. In short, I strongly agree with Amy’s point of view and I believe that compulsory history lessons have great benefits for students.
