Essay topics:

Many old buildings are protected by law because they are part of a nation's history. However, some people think old buildings should be knocked down to make way for new ones because people need houses and offices. How important is it to maintain old buildings? Should history stand in the way of progress?

Preserving old buildings reflects as a national landmark, yet some believe they should be replaced to meet modern needs. This essay examines the importance of its preservation; however, I reckon that historical value contributes the least aspect of a country’s progress.

On the one hand, maintaining old buildings holds significant value in preserving a nation's cultural identity. These historical structures may reflect the journey of the traditions and indigenous communities. For instance, landmarks such as temples in Indonesia or mosques in the Middle East stand as symbols of heritage and collective memory. Additionally, the building-integrated active systems offer dual advantages. Although it ensures the preservation of cultural heritage, it could simultaneously adapt these buildings to serve contemporary purposes. A notable example is the Louvre Museum in Paris, where the combination of ancient structures with innovative designs would enhance both its functionality and aesthetic appeal.

However, it seems to me that old buildings hinder progress, especially in rapidly urbanising regions in which one pressing concern is the shortage of housing caused by rising populations. Cities like Tokyo and Mumbai face severe housing crises, compelling authorities to demolish old buildings to accommodate residential and commercial developments. Moreover, medieval architectural designs can negatively impact central mobility and its economies. It is undoubtedly that their outdated layouts often lead to traffic congestion, further exacerbating economic challenges in emerging areas. Prioritising infrastructure upgrades over preservation, like Shanghai, has experienced faster economic growth compared to historically constrained cities such as Rome.

In conclusion, while historical buildings play a crucial role in preserving cultural identity and its value, their retention should not impede urban progress. Nonetheless, I would cite that where housing or economic growth is at stake, archaic constructs have to be replaced following modern demands and retrofitted to improve urban functionality.
