The purpose of businesses is to make money and they should concentrate only on this. Do you agree or disagree?
The rapid development of industrialization has raised great concerns about the role of business. While some people believe that making money, which is the purpose of business, should be the only target. However, I strongly disagree with this point of view. I reckon that businesses have social and environmental responsibilities beyond generating profits.
Undeniably, earning profit is a core purpose for the survival and growth of any business. In fact, businessmen need a huge amount of money to invest in running costs and other expenditures such as employee’s monthly salaries, maintenance, as well as innovation and investment to catch up with the increasing demand of the market. However, focusing exclusively on financial gain can lead to negative consequences such as worker exploitation, environmental degradation, and unethical practices. For instance, companies that prioritize profits over everything else might resort to cutting costs by ignoring safety standards or underpaying employees.
Besides making money, companies must take social and environmental responsibilities as well as customer services into consideration in the long term. Firstly, exceptional customer service is essential for building trust and loyalty. A business that provides good quality products and treats its customers with respect, responds to their needs, and solves problems efficiently is more likely to retain those customers. This leads to repeat purchases, positive word-of-mouth, and a strong brand reputation. Secondly , by contributing positively to society, businesses can build stronger connections with customers. For example, firms that adopt eco-friendly practices or support local communities are more likely to be trusted and supported by the public. Therefore, integrating social and environmental goals with financial objectives is not only ethical but also beneficial for business sustainability.
In conclusion, while making money is a fundamental aim of businesses, it should not be their only focus. Companies must balance profit-making with social and environmental responsibilities in order to thrive in the long term and contribute to a better society.
