Both the reading passage and the lecturer are discussing whether the fine line figures on a discovered fossil skeleton of Sinosauropteryx dinosaur are indicating that it had feathers or not. The reading claims that there is not hard evidence for these patterns to be feathers due to three reasons. The lecturer, however, casts doubt on what the author mentions and presents some evidence to refute them all.
In the reading passage, the author argues that probably the pattern is a result of the decomposition of the Sinosauropteryx’s skin in volcanic ash. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that there is no such a decomposition in other animals’ fossils and the skin of them has been preserved in volcanic ash.
In addition, according to the reading passage some experts claim that the fine lines may be referred to frills of the dinosaur rather than its feathers. On the contrary, the professor points out that chemical structures of frills and feathers are different and there is a type of protein called beta-keratin in the structure of feathers not existing in frills and the scientists’ analysis suggests that the Sinosauropteryx’s structure did contain beta-keratin. Therefore, this can be a strong reason predicting the existence of feathers.
Finally, the reading asserts that the tasks of feathers are aiding for flying and thermoregulation. Although, the location of the lines is not so appropriate for these functions. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue by stating that feathers have another function of attracting mate like peacock bird whose colorful feathers have such a role. Besides, some analysis has shown that the Sinosauropteryx’s structure was orange and white which could be a reason for having feathers in order to display and attract a mate.
