On the one hand, the writer presents three possible theories that might explain stones' utility. The writer affirms that because of their size, the stones could have been used as a scale for measuring quantities of grains or food. However, the speaker refutes this theory, asserting that the carved stones are made from distinct materials, and as a consequence some are heavier, other are lighter. Therefore, this second argument is a viable standpoint against author's point of view.
Third, objects indicating the status of an important individual, are usually buried with the owner. The author sustains the theory of social status because some of stones have complicated designs. Anyway, the speaker underlines that only a part of them have elaborated designs, and that the others are pretty simple. So, it is impossible to affirm that stones were more than personal objects. In conclusion, the author and the speaker seem to be in total disagreement regarding this topic.
