Robert E Peary, a famous adventurer and arctic explorer, had reached the North Pole in his journey or not. The author of the reading passage presents three reasons for demonstrating that he reached the North Pole on April 7, 1909. However, the lecturer believes none of the reasons could precisely explain the claim.
The author argues that the National Geographic Society's investigation proves that Peary had reached the North Pole according to documents and records. The lecturer argues against this reason and believes that the National Geographic Societies report is unreliable, for this committee consists of Peary's friends. Moreover, they financially supported Peary's journey. In addition, it took two days to reach conclusion. As a result, the conclusions are biased and unreliable.
Furthermore, the reading passage asserts that Tom Avery, a British explorer, used the same type of equipment and made the same journey in less than 37 days. This indicates that Peary's claims are authentic. Nevertheless, the lecturer illustrates that the conditions in which Avery reached the North Pole completely different from Peary's. Moreover, even if Peary and Avery used the same dogsled, Avery's dogsled was much thinner than Peary's, for Avery's food has been dropped along the way. Moreover, Avery reports include very favorable weather conditions, opposite the peary's reports. Consequently, this claim does not have strong support to be acceptable.
Finally, the reading asserts that the photographs confirm that Peary has reached North Pole. The lecturer opposes this point by explaining that photos are blurred and the camera used is not good. Therefore, the shadows in the picture can not demonstrate the exact position. Furthermore, we can not establish a dog's exact position. Accordingly, the photographs could not be a strong evidence to support the claim.
