The reading and lecture are both about whether or not the memoir of Chevalier de Seinaglt were true or not. The lecturer believes that the details written in the memoirs were not factual and the details are distorted and invented to depicts he has a exciting and extravagant life. The lecturer cast doubts about the claims made in the article and refuses all the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the lecturer points out that when Chevalier was in Switzerland, people were accustomed on spending their money on parties and gambling. But, evidence shows that he borrowed a heaps of money from a Swiss merchant. It is mentioned that critics argues that if Chevalier is really wealthy then he does not need to borrow money from anyone. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that Chevalier was a Rich man and loves to party and gamble, However, he has plenty of money to use for gambling but must wait for it to arrive. Furthermore, he argues that it may took a while to convert assets into cash so, he must borrow money from the Swiss merchant.
Secondly, the author contends that critics are skeptical about the records of conversation between himself and Volataire, the famous writer. The article notes that the accuracy of the conversation is not true because it was written ahead of time. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that Chevalier took notes of the conversation he had with Volataire, writing each night on his memoirs. He elaborates on this by mentioning that people around Chevalier can attest to the truthfulness of the memoirs due to he kept all the conversations through the years.
Lastly, the author states that critics questioned the memoirs account of Chevalier's escape from prison in Venice. The article established that he escaped by drilling a hole in the ceiling of the prison room and climbing through the roof. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that he did not escape through his connections with his friend by bribing to set him free. He puts forth the idea that on the old Venetian government history there are evidence that the roof were broken and later on it was repaired so it is a proof that it was used by Chevalier to escape.
