Both reading and the lecture talk about the fine line found in a species of dinosaurs' fossils. The author of the article support the opinion that these fine lines don't mean the presence of feathers and provides three reasons for support. While in contrary, the professor believes that these lines represent feathers and provides her reasons.
First of all, the author points that these lines formed after the dinosaur death. As it is mentioned in the article the skin of the dinosaur after being buried in the volcanic ash may have been decomposed into fibers. These fibers preserved over the fossil in lines. The lines are misinterpreted as evidence of feathers. The professor challenges this point out. She says that this is not the case for the other animals buried in the same area. she elaborates that the animals buried beside the dinosaur in the volcanic ash still preserving a good beautiful functional evidence of their parts. This is a good evidence that the lines represent feathers not skin decomposition.
Second,the author conducts that the lines most probably represent frills. The articles notes that dinosaurs have many different fan shaped structure bones. So it is hard to deiced which part of the dinosaur this was, but some of the critics arguing that these lines are remains of frills more than of feathers. The professor rebuts on that. She says that chemical composition of frills is different than that of feathers. Feathers contains a protein called beta carotene which is not found in frills. By analysis the scientist found remains of beta carotene in the dinosaurs fossils.
Finally, the author stats that the location of the lines on the dinosaur body will make the feather useless. The article establish that the lines found along the backbone and the tail which is quite useless. The feather used usually either for flying or for regulating the animals temperature. But being placed along the backbones and the tail will not help with any pf those functions. On the other hand, the professors disagrees. She says that not all the animals use feathers for thermoregulation or for flying. She gives an example of Peacock which use his colored feather for showing function or for mating. The same for the dinosaurs which may use the feathers for just playing, especially after the researches show that they mostly colored feathers.
