Both the reading and the lecture debate the migrating behavior of the elephant-sized dinosaurs Alaska’s North slope Edmontosaur, which was very common on North’s slope. The author of the reading supports the migration Hypothesis, whereas the lecturer contends that is unlikely that the Edmontosaurus had a migratory behavior.
The first argument used by the author is that the Edmontosaur exclusively fed on plants, but the climate during the North slope winter was not favorable to plant growth, therefore these animals had to move southwards for feeding. The lecturer states during that period the climate was warmer than today and in some periods of the year the sun shone 24 hours, and the plants were present all the year long.
Second, the author argues that several skeletons have been found in the same site, and this suggests that Edmontosaurus lived in herds. The author points out that many modern-day migratory animals live and migrate in held, thus this another proof in supporting the migration theory. The lecturer rebuts this claim using an example of same species of today animal that live in herds but they do not migrate, they live in herds to get extra protection.
Finally, the reading says that the Edmontosaurus was physically capable of migrating long distances, but the lecturer mentions on the fact that the juveniles are not as capable as adults and they would never have made it, so in order to protect the offspring the adults had to stay in the North slope for survival.
