The reading and the lecture are both debate about strange underwater sounds detected by sailors in Russian submarines. The author of the readings thinks that there are three explanations, whereas the lecturer argues that these reasons are not satisfactory.
First of all, the author mentions that the strange noises could be the sounds emitted by Orca whales males to attract the female during the courtship ritual. The lecturer casts doubt on this theory and explains that is highly unlike because even these animals are present in the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean, they live near the surface and not at the depth where these sounds were registered by submarine sonars.
Second, the author proposes that these sounds are caused by the giant squid, he believes that there is a possibility that these smart animal have the ability to emit sound, but they do not have the skeleton and their soft bodies cannot be detected by sonars. the lecturer rebuts this claim, she notes that the squids disappeared for two decades before the 1980's, and according to her there is no reason to reappear 20 years later.
Finally, the author suggests that that the sounds could have come from foreign submarines which use a kind of technology designed to be undetectable by sonar. the lecturer put forth the idea, she feels that this theory cannot holds up because the today submarines can not move as fast as the sound registered. furthermore, today technology is not so advanced to make submarines to not be detected by sonar.
