The reading passage and listenning both compare franchising with independent business. The author claims that franchising is more benefical than independent business and brings up three reasons to this claim. However, the lecturer casts doubt on this claim and refutes each of the reasons.
First of all, the author mentions that, finding correct supppliers of the good and services is difficult and can be costly for the independent business owners. By contrast, the lecturer refutes this idea by explaining that franchise companies sell their good and services with overprices and owners of frenchises has only 6 percent of the total return. Hence, she states that this is not advantage for the franchise owners.
In the second place, the author talks about another advantage of the franchise business which is franchise owners don't have to spend money for their business because the product aldready advertised due to company. Nevertheless, the lecturer opposes this point and says that companies advertise only their own products so franchise owner has no benefit on their business. Moreover, she mentions that franchise owners have to use half of their money for advertising their own business. This is a strong standpoint that contradicts the author's point of view.
Finally, the author states that franchise secure the business owner who has lack of experience in the business. In contrary, the lecturer mentions that the reading passage does not talk about a 3rd option which is people can buy a business from a previous owner. She states that it is twice profitable than franchise companies in 1st year.
