traditional encyclopedias
The reading and listening passages are discussing communal encyclopedias. The article states that the traditional encyclopedias are valuable than online communal encyclopedias. The author provides three problems in online encyclopedias for the support. However, the speaker mentions that online encyclopedias are more valuable compared to printed encyclopedias and problems are much small related to what it gives us, and refutes each of the problems mentions in the article.
First, the speaker mentions that there are more chances to correct errors in online encyclopedias. In addition, if the error made in traditionally printed encyclopedias, they last long for decays and it is not possible to correct them. Moreover, there are some errors found in traditional encyclopedias even encyclopedias made by trained experts. This challenged the point made in the article that traditional encyclopedias do not have any error as they written by experts.
Second, the lecturer adds that in the problem of unauthorised entry and changes by a hacker, is solved by two strategies. In the first strategy, online encyclopedias have the feature of that it is only in reading format and any changes is not possible. The second strategy is to hire a special editor team, they pay attention to the online encyclopedias and remove unauthorised malicious changes. This point rebuts assertion made in the article that changes made in the original content of encyclopedias by a hacker is its drawback.
Third, The speaker mentions that problem of content in online encyclopedias like it has broad and too in-depth content is not its disadvantage, it is its strongest advantage over traditionally printed encyclopedias although. She elaborates this by saying that in traditional encyclopedias there is a problem of space so experts have to think what to add or not. but, in online encyclopedias, it is not a problem its benefit of that and with that, it can cover most of the content in depth. This reject point made in the reading that, a broad topic is difficult in focusing particular point and considering the importance of the topic.
