The reading and the speaker discuss the extinction of Steller's sea cows from different perspectives. The author of the reading give three reasons to support his ideas. However, the speaker casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He says that none of the ideas are convincing.
First of all, the author of the reading points out that the Steller's sea cows were over hunted by a group of native Siberian dwellers. This point is challenged by the speaker. He restates the fact that the Steller's sea cows have huge size. They would reach weights of 8-10 metric tons and their lengths up to 9 meters. One Steller's sea cow could feed a village of people in a month. Meanwhile, the populations of people at that time were small. Therefore, they did not need to hunt many Steller's sea cow for food.
Secondly, the author of the reading contends that the Steller's sea cows might be extinct because of the disturbance of ecosystems led to the decreasing of the kelp, which is the main food resource of the sea cows. The speaker rebuts this argument by saying that severe climate in Bering island would affect not only kelp but also other marines, such as whales. However, local fishers did not report any thing about the reduction of whales at all.
Finally, the author of the reading states that European killed a lot of the Steller's sea cows for fur trading. The speaker, on the other hand, opposes this point by saying that the populations of the Steller's sea cows were reduced already considerably before European arrived. In fact, the European arrived at the Bering island after the extinction of the Steller's sea cows about hundreds years. Therefore, they could not be the cause of the extinction of the Steller's sea cows.
