The article and lecture debate over whether certification to wood companies are benificial in attracting the customer or not.The article claims that certification doesn't make much difference to companies to attract their customer base. However, professor in the lecture posits that there are benifits to companies by seeking certification and refutes each of the reasons given by article.
First, the reading states that the American consumers do not trust advertising and hence they don't pay attention to advertisement. But, professor refutes this point by saying that consumers do not treat all the advertisement as equal. They do distinguish between normal advertisment and that of company which claims to have ecocertification. They are aware of the benifits of eco friendly products and do trust companies that claim to have these certification.
Second, the reading posits that ecocertified products are costly and consumers prefer to go with cheaper products. However, professor asserts that consumers definetly care about cost if difference costs of same product by two companies is very high. Let's say if there is 5% difference in cost of product that is ecocertified and normal product, then consumers definetly chose ecocertified product irrespective of the price. After all, American consumers care about preserving the environment and protecting the eco system.
Third, according to reading, the claim that American wood companies have compete with international goods doesn't make sense since they have huge local consumer base. But, professor opposes this point by saying that companies have to concentrate on wood bussiness. He states if they do not keep up with the standards of international companies, then consumers who are inclined towards ecocertified products would go imported products. As a result, they are going to lose their market share. Hence, it is important for companies to ecocertify their products not for exports but to sustain their customer base.
